Nelly Frijda

4th of May, 1936

Frijda is a Dutch (voice) actrice, comedian, and former politician. She was born in Amsterdam, as Nelly Wiegel.

Frijda's parents were Johannes Wiegel, and Alida van Moorsel. She grew up in a working-class family. She studied at the Montessori Lyceum in Amsterdam, and the Spinoza Lyceum. After this she went to the Amsterdam Theatre School. When Frijda was seventeen, she walked away from home, and went to live by herself in a house at the Bloemgracht in Amsterdam.

Frijda was removed from the Theatre School in Amsterdam after three months. Frijda later said herself this was because 'antisocial behavior, lack of imagination, and a shortage of talent.' On the 13th of May 1959, Nelly married psycologist Nico Frijda. Frijda had one daughter, and two sons with him. In 1975 Nelly divorced her husband, but kept his last name. She lived for years at the Prinsengracht, but since seven years she lives in a residential care center.

In 1955 Frijda had her debut in the cabaret of Wim Kan. Frijda played in plays, as well as in musicals. With the Dutch audience she is mostly known as Ma Flodder, from the Flodder series, and films.

Another important voice role, she did is Nana in Madagascar 2.
