Frieda van Hessen
24th of April, 1915 - 31st of October, 2021
Frieda Ella van Hessen was born in Amsterdam, and was a Dutch soprano. Her father, Izaak van Hessen was an officer in the Dutch army, and her mother Sarline Diamant, was like Frieda a singer. Frieda had two brothers growing up: Bernard and Eduard Frieda studied at the conservatory of Amsterdam, and had a promising career until this was cut short because of the Nazi occupation of Europe. The family was Jewish, but weren't really involved with the faith. In the second World War, Frieda was still performing, untill eventually she had to go into hiding, going from adres to adres. Her father, mother, and brother Eduard didn't survive the war, and died in Auschwitz. During the liberation of the Netherlands, Frieda met Canadian soldier Keith Saunders who she married in 1947 (they did divorce later on). With Keith she went to Canada, and later with him to the United States. After the war Frieda wrote the book Life in the Shadow of the Swastika and she converted herself to Christianity. Frieda died in 2021 at the great age of 106 years old.
