Cruys Voorbergh
14th of October, 1898 - 3rd of September, 1963
Ernest Pieter Coenraad van Vrijberghe de Coningh was a Dutch actor, comedian, publicist, and director. Cruys Voorbergh is a pseudonim, which he chose because his art teacher was called Kruijs Voorberge. Cruys was born in Bagoe on the Indonesian island Java, when Indonesia were called the Dutch East Indies, and still a part of the Netherlands. His father Jacob Marius van Vrijberghe de Coningh was the boss of a sugarfactory on Java. He grew up in a family with a brother, and a sister. In 1900 the family moved to Amsterdam.

Cruys studied medicine, but what he actually wanted to do was a career in the arts. His parents didn't like that, so to also please them he went for studying the violin. He eventually did have his debute on stage in 1918 at the Groot Toneel. It still wasn't the right time then, and he eventually worked two months in an office, and went back to school to get his degree in being an art teacher. Finally in 1925 he went back to the stage. In 1942 he was the director at the Amsterdam opera. In 1952 he founded his own cabaret company.

He also played in a couple of films a.o.t.: Willem van Oranje (1934), De familie van mijn vrouw (1935), Kermis in de regen (1962), Aan de vooravond (1963), and Schuld en boete (1963)

Cruys had two childeren who both died young, a son Coen van Vrijberge de Coningh (1950 - 1997), who was also an actor, and did dubbing work, and a daughter Emmy van Vrijberghe de Coningh (1947 - 1992), who was an artist. Until 1952 Cruys was married to Ada van Geel.
